Mexico
In 2022, Mexico updated its Nationally Determined Contribution
(NDC), aiming to reduce GHG emissions 35% by 2030, as opposed to its original
22% target. There
have been efforts to increase renewable energy capacity, including the
installation of distributed solar systems and the development of wind and solar
power plants. Mexico also aims to continue integrating clean energy by
modernizing hydroelectric plants and increasing their capacity, fostering
collaboration with Canada and the US for 40 GW of clean capacity, and reducing
energy losses.
Brazil
Brazil is making
significant strides in the green hydrogen sector. Madrid-based renewable energy
company FRV has announced a $5 billion investment to develop a 2 GW green
hydrogen project at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex in Ceará. The H2
Cumbuco project aims to produce green ammonia for export, particularly to
European and Asian markets, and is expected to create 1,500 jobs during
construction and over 200 during operation.
Additionally, Linde's subsidiary,
White Martins, plans to build a five-megawatt electrolyzer plant in Jacareí,
São Paulo, to supply green hydrogen to various industrial sectors, including
glass manufacturing.
Chile
Chile continues to lead
Latin America's push for clean hydrogen. The country's National Green Hydrogen
Strategy aims to increase electrolyzer capacity to 5 GW by 2025 and 25 GW by
2030, with a targeted hydrogen price of $0.8-$1.1 per kilogram by the end of
the decade. This strategy positions Chile as a significant player in global
low-emission hydrogen production. To support this, the World Bank approved a
$150 million loan to promote investment in green hydrogen projects, focusing on
creating green jobs and decarbonizing local industries.
